You Must Allow Me to Tell You How Ardently I Admire and Love You...
No, this is not another P&P post. Take another guess... Marriage proposals! :D I actually looked up the most famous marriage proposals and guess what was number 1? That's right. Pride and Prejudice. Ha! ...Well, the train wreck one, not the actually successful one, which is ironic.
Anyways, what this post is actually going to be about is my personal top 6 favorite marriage proposal/declaration of love scenes from my favorite romantic movies. (BEcause I like to go one step beyond) OK, here we go!
6) YOU'VE GOT MAIL -"Don't cry, shopgirl. Don't cry." -"I wanted it to be you. I wanted it to be you so badly."
Ahh, it's such a sweet and simple scene, but I still love it. It's not uber romantic, nor is it an actual marriage proposal, but it's still wonderful! It's just the way everything in the movie is leading up to this moment, especially the last, I don't know, twenty minutes. How he prepares her for the revelation that her internet love is actually him. He has to make her like him as a person first before they "meet". Then when he's convinced that she's ready, they set it up. She's waiting there, then he comes around the corner and... ahhhhh! Me gusta!
5) THE PROPOSAL"So Margaret, marry me, because I'd like to date you."
This has to be on the list. The title of the movie is The Proposal! I love the overall quirky and random tone of this movie. And it doesn't change for the proposal scene XD His entire proposal is hilarious and yet completely endearing at the same time. He kind of makes it out to be a Mr. Darcy-esque type of proposal where he insults her for a lot of it, but then he begins to explain that he doesn't think any of those things anymore. What makes it even better is the entire office watching and reacting all the while. It's just a great proposal (even though I would never want to be proposed to in such a way XD).
4) PRIDE AND PREJUDICE"You are to generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged, but one word from you will silence me on this subject forever."
Are we honestly surprised that this is on my list? No, I'm not putting the crash-and-burn one, I'm keeping to the happy ending ones. I don't care what version I'm watching or reading, this proposal is AWESOME! I mean, the nerve he has to propose again to the woman who rejected him so harshly a few months earlier. And then her, she's just been in agony because she's convinced that he no longer cares about her, but now she's in love with him. Jane Austen just has a way with words that not many people do. I mean, look at that proposal! It is so eloquent!
3) THE DECOY BRIDE"To my wife. A chapter can be a book."
That quote isn't actually in this clip, but I couldn't find one with it. It's the dedication in his book that is only one chapter long. Once again, not a marriage proposal, but still cute. A not-so-well-known movie, but adorable and fun all the same. I love this scene because of all it's references to past conversations and inside jokes (sheep stealing/woman snatching, write about what you know, chapter can be a book, intelligent feedback, etc). You can't fully appreciate it without watching the entire movie. Dey iz so COOT!
2) WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING -"Can I come in there, please?" -"I can't... Not without a token." -"Marry me?" -"Yeah. I love you." -"I love you back."
Be honest, some of you are a little shocked that this isn't my number 1, right? This is like my all time favorite rom-com! And this proposal is friggin' ADORABLE! She's just sitting there and then the ring drops in. And there they all are! She thought she would never see any of them again! And then he comes in and proposes and all is well! Like with The Proposal, what makes this infinitely more better is the family practically pressing their faces against the glass as they kiss. Oh, and did I mention that he is leaning over her as he proposes? XD
1) THE WEDDING SINGER -"I've got a confession to make. That song was about you. I'm in love with you." -"I'm so in love with you."
Weren't expecting that, were you? Not necessarily a marriage proposal, but it might as well be one. It's seriously the CA-YOU-TEST thing ever! I love this song. It's full of all the things they talked about of what they both wanted in a marriage (doing the little things for the other and growing old with each other) and he's basically saying that he wants that with her. Also how he surprises her by coming out of first class with his guitar and how he recruits everybody to help him (including Billy Idol) XD. It's just the perfect scene!
I wonder how Sandra Bullock feels about making the list twice? These were so fun to watch.
